「我們的團名Athletics是以一種迂迴的方式來敘述著人與人之間的差異以及不同：
我們是誰，以及那些我們所做的事，僅此而已，
而我們至今仍舊沒變，依然是那群運動員，也都還是朋友。」
成軍於2009年的紐澤西，athletics是由Garrett Yaeger為核心 (vocals, guitar, piano)，加上其他團員：Howie Cohen (vocals, guitar)、John Cannon (drums)、Jimmy Boyce (guitar)、Zach West（bass）所組成的post-rock/post-hardcore樂團。
編曲特色屏棄了熟悉的主副歌制式編排，以鼓點和吉他為主導來鋪陳及轉折不同的段落，甚至是銜接歌曲和歌曲之間的橋段。時而低喃時而嘶吼的嗓音和樂器相輔相成，輕易地就能將聽者拉入情緒之中，而穿插在歌曲中如同短詩般，不成段落的細膩歌詞也能在激昂壯闊的段落中毫不費力地逼出聽者的淚。如此抑鬱狂躁的曲風卻又為何取了個給人們正面印象的團名：Athletics（運動員）呢？
鼓手John Cannon曾如此自嘲「我們所有人年輕的時候都十分熱衷於運動，但現在的我們已經跟運動員(athletics）八竿子打不著邊，只是一群怪咖（nerds)」，而前bass手John Luby則給出了這樣的答案：「我們的團名Athletics是以一種迂迴的方式來敘述著人與人之間的差異以及不同：我們是誰，以及那些我們所做的事，僅此而已，而我們至今仍舊沒變，依然是那群運動員，也都還是朋友。」

作為樂團的首張問世之作，Why Aren’t I Home絕對足夠令世人驚豔，不管是透明感十足的吉他riff、如同強烈脈搏的bassline、揪心萬分的歌詞還是攀升至頂後綿延的高潮，都是Athletics對於自己風格最淋漓盡致的彰顯。在這張作品中你可以找到各種post-rock的元素和post-hardcore在動靜之間無數次的碰撞後被完美的融合成一種只能命名為「Athletics」的渾沌。

2012年推出的Stop Torturing Yourself 選出了上一張Why Aren’t I Home的四首歌重新編成alternate piano ver。比起上一張的狂放激昂，重新編曲的版本只有簡單的主唱以及鋼琴。一聲聲似對自我的控訴以及責問的背後是琴鍵中流瀉而出，透明感十足的琴聲在聽者心中一起一落，就像是獨自赤裸著和自己內心的脆弱面對面一般，彷彿只要在關了燈的房間聆聽便會輕易的被孤獨感所籠罩並被吞噬的一乾二淨。
有趣的是根據鼓手兼視覺設計的Cannon的說法，這張作品的封面照是拍攝自製作Why Aren’t I Home時他們所住的房子。在辭去了紐約的工作的當天他創作出了這張封面，「因為我不想再繼續以我所痛恨的工作來折磨我自己了。」Cannon如是說，也與Why Aren’t I Home冥冥之中有著遙相呼應的連結感。

這是一張概念意味濃厚的專輯，也是筆者目前最喜歡的一張。與其說這是一張只有五首歌的mini album（Find Yourself ver.為無vocal的純instrumental版本），更不如說這張作品重頭到尾其實只有一整首長至30分鐘的歌一分為五，曲名再分別以羅馬數字的1~5來作為part與part的分別，一氣呵成地探討著愛、失去以及自我接受。
從I開始幽微的guitar intro，突如其來的嘶吼以及喧囂的吉他音牆如狂風驟雨般揭開了本張專輯中的第一幕高潮，直擊心臟的鼓點段落更是無情地將你狠抓至空中甩盪，當你還驚魂未定時，歌曲已不著痕跡地悄然回歸平靜的低喃，再次為下一次的高潮鋪墊。就這樣，幾次來回的冷熱交淬之後，回神之時才驚覺段落竟早已來到最後的V！結束之際仍意猶未盡，讓人不禁在心中大呼「It’s not enough！」
而最後的Find Yourself version則是將主唱部分全部挖空，意欲使聽者自己在聆聽時代入自己的情感，在一樣的曲子中尋找不一樣的自己。
就在後天9/2，Athletics將會帶來新的作品"When to Run, Where to Hide”，與先前大相逕庭的純白背景和人物插畫的背後訴說著什麼樣的故事呢？就讓我們拭目以待這睽違兩年之久的作品吧。
